Chapter 4

How Depressing

Where does the Xmas (as I am wont to call it some times) season find most people. Many enter the season with great expectations of joy, happiness, warmness, and closeness to others. The word Xmas is sometimes used instead of Christmas. It fits with the “SALE” sign so very well. In Greek, X is the first letter of Christ's name, Xristos. It was frequently used as a holy symbol. This tradition began in the early Christian church.

Christmas is associated with a higher suicide rate than any other time of year. There is much more intoxication, along with drunk driving which has killed thousands of people over the years. How many Christmas parties help create an adulterous atmosphere for many folks? The atmosphere is one of a free-for-all. It’s all that pressure to provide for everyone on your list and make the season better than last year, somehow.

The image I see when I think of Christmas is an extreme commercialization of the hearts of people. I see folks wanting to do what’s right or considered good by every one else but missing the proper way to lead their family in true Christ like actions during that season. They are totally controlled by “tradition” and “what we’ve always done” that I think they just go along and try and have a good time. They make the best of the season. After all, they rationalize, isn’t Christ good and anything I do to honor Him is good. When I think of Christ as an infant, I think of a blessed yet uncertain young bride relegated to a stable for her birthing with only her husband and some farm animals and a huge star shining in the Bethlehem sky. I believe the man born that night, besides being the Messiah, is the greatest leader of all time and I think we should honor Him in a more worthy manner.

If you feel rejected and alone during Christmas because you have turned your back on the idolatrous people around you, realize that Christ was rejected, denied, criticized, mocked, hated, reviled, plotted against, and finally crucified for His preaching of the truth. You’re in good company. Lift your head high, lift your spirits, and praise God in spirit and in truth.
